Zoë slept in on Saturday morning so Mal and Rob had a leisurely and mutually satisfying fuck, then showered and made breakfast.

"She must be tired to be ignoring bacon," Mal said, turning the rashers under the grill.

"Only thing that wakes my Dad up," Rob admitted. "Hey, she's a nurse. Don't they run mostly on coffee? Like long distance lorry drivers and merchant bankers?"

"That's a point. I've got a coffee maker ... somewhere."

They found the glossy piece of kitchen sculpture on a top shelf in a cupboard Mal rarely opened. Rob had fun twiddling the knobs, claiming he was trying to pick up signals from Mars. "This doesn't look like something you'd buy, Mal," he said. It beeped. "Shit, I think I just ordered a nuclear strike on Welshpool. Just isn't your style at all."

"No, it's not. It was a birthday present from an ex."

"But you only drink tea?"

"That's why he's an ex." Mal grinned. "When I left I took it with me out of spite."

There was an unopened pack of coffee grounds in the same cupboard. It was labelled 'Best Before December 2016' but Mal doubted that mattered much. It certainly smelled all right and it did the trick where Zoë was concerned.

"Mmm coffee," she muttered as she zombied into the kitchen and made grabby hands at Mal until he put a mug in them. She was wearing Spiderman pyjamas, and Mal found himself overwhelmed with affection, both for Zoë who was sipping, barely awake, and for Rob who seemed to be appreciating the vision as much as Mal was.

Two coffees and a bacon sandwich later, Zoë had woken up enough to talk. She curled up at one end of the sofa, Rob took the other, and Mal took the lopsided little armchair.

"That hit the spot," Zoë said. "Do you always live this well, Mal? Or are you trying to impress Rob."

"He doesn't need bacon banjos to impress me," Rob said. "You feeling better now?"

"Yes, why the sudden visitation?" Mal cradled his tea mug in both hands. "What's happened that needs to be told face to face rather than your usual text or phone call? Honestly, Rob, this is a girl who once texted me 'in car crash, car totalled, please pick cat up from vets'. I was frantic."

"Oh Mal, it gave you the information you needed. If I'd been bleeding out at the roadside I'd hardly have been likely to be texting you."

"She's got a point,” Rob said.

"And that vet closed at seven and I couldn't afford an overnight stay for the stupid cat."

"All right, if you two are going to gang up on me ... " Mal said, and grinned when Rob leaned over to punch his leg.

"If it's super secret family stuff I'll be on my way," Rob said. "Got to see a man about a digger sometime today, anyway."

"Oh no," Zoë put her hand on Rob's shoulder, pressing him back to his seat. "No secrets. It was just one of those impulses that made a lot of sense at the time.
